Hyperion Class Heavy Cruiser

Last updated on 2/19/98

A revolutionary new ship, the Hyperion took maximum advantage of Centauri technology transfer. Compared to the older Nova class, the Hyperion class has a more efficient power system and improved drive technology. More compact systems provided a hull, which was lighter and more maneuverable than any comparable Earth Alliance capital ship while carrying the same fighter compliment of the larger Nova.

While apparently mounting fewer weapon systems than the multi-turreted Nova, the Hyperion's improved sensors and more varied weapon load out produced a much more capable vessel. Improved pulse cannons, while doing less damage per pulse could fire more than twice as many as the Nova's earlier models could. The addition of plasma cannons and particle beams gave the Hyperion a better close in punch and provided improved interception capability.

  • DESIGNER'S NOTES:

The obvious changes to the basic Hyperion was the deletion of the heavy lasers in conjunction with a corresponding reduction in reactor. All weapons were also reduced to early years type systems. The center main thrust was reduced to match the other two engines, thus reducing total thrust to 6. No other significant changes have been made to this workhorse of Earth Force.

It would seem reasonable to assume that some ships of the class may have had their system incrementally improved with better systems or weapons to simulate fleet updates during the course of time.
